Dear Simon Youth Foundation Supporters,
Over the past two years, many have learned what Simon Youth Foundation (SYF) has always known: education is essential.
Though SYF felt the ongoing impact of the pandemic on our work with students, teachers, and partners across the country, we also had the privilege of watching dedicated Simon Youth Academy educators and committed students persevered and adapted to ever-changing circumstances.
SYF, a national foundation, also experienced transformational change during the pandemic with the hire of Andrea L. Neely, on November 6, 2021, as its third President and Chief Executive Officer. Andrea brings over fifteen years of experience in serving first generation students often underserved. She possess deep understanding of the needs, challenges and opportunities facing young people in the education and workforce arenas today. Andrea is the right leader to expand SYF into new markets, elevate SYF’s voice and presence nationally, and most importantly, inspire the students SYF serves to reach their full potential through education.
SYF saw an increase in demand for our academies during the pandemic and we welcomed nine new academies into our network; Florida; BETA, Indiana: Shelbyville Central Schools, Center Grove Schools, Richmond High Schools, Greenfield Central Schools, Lawrence Township Schools, Richmond High Schools, and Hope Academy, Illinois: Springfield Learning Academy. Simon Youth Academy students learned to complete their work in a new normal as the pandemic continued and they returned to the classroom full time; many returned with the support and encouragement of their dedicated academy leaders as they re-engaged with their peers while adhering to all required guidelines. Students and Educators welcomed the opportunity to travel to Washington DC to attend the annual program, Close-Up.
To meet our educators where they are, SYF again transformed our four-day, in-person Annual Educator Conference into a year-long virtual professional development experience. Included were monthly offerings designed to support the evolving needs of nearly 500 educators in our national network of 44 Academies in 16 states.
In adherence to local guidelines and grounded by our commitment to promoting the health and safety of our supporters, SYF was forced to adjust and cancel 50% of our annual fundraising events. We are humbled that SYF’s partners prioritized their donations: National Sponsors maintained their sponsorship levels, our summer event sponsors returned, Simon employees exceeded annual giving expectations, virtual events such as our 5K “I Run So They Can Walk” and silent auction were buoyed by support from Simon Mall teams, and hundreds of individuals.
I am pleased to share, that despite all the challenges in the 2021-2022 academic year, SYF students achieved a 93% graduation rate and brought SYF’s lifetime number of graduates to 26,000 with the addition of the 1698 students in the class of 2022. SYF has remained committed to ending the dropout crisis since our inception. Today, our mission has never been more relevant as Simon Youth Academies face record demands to enroll more students. With your continued support, SYF can ensure all students are seen for who they can be: Graduates.
