Donors and Philanthropic Partnerships

Like many nonprofits, SYF was not immune to economic effects stemming from the pandemic. SYF’s annual fundraising events, including Founders Celebration, The Masquerade gala, and Simon Regional Fundraisers, represent 55% of the Foundation’s annual operating budget but were canceled in 2020 to prioritize the health of our supporters and adhere to local and federal guidelines.

Despite this, SYF’s donors and supporters stepped up to ensure that #SYFmeansGraduation – no matter what.

2020 National Sponsors

Established in celebration of SYF’s 20th anniversary, National Sponsors represent an exclusive group of top supporters who provide ongoing support to SYF. In recognition of their generosity and support for SYF’s mission, National Sponsors are publicly recognized at SYF events, on social media, and across communication platforms throughout the year.

SYF’s annual golf outing traditionally takes place each June at The Legends Golf Club. Amid the uncertainty in spring 2020, SYF opted to host the event in September and worked closely with local officials and club coordinators to ensure supporters enjoyed a safe and fun afternoon on the golf course. New and returning sponsors demonstrated their unwavering support on and off the course – the event generated $70,000 and tied a 2019 record!

Virtual Events

Committed to finding new ways to engage our supporters, SYF piloted several new virtual initiatives during the 2020-2021 academic year.

SYF’s first-ever Virtual 5K in fall 2020 encouraged people to lace up their sneakers and “run so they can walk” across the graduation stage. The Orange Grad Cap Challenge, through which each Simon Youth Academy decorated an orange graduation cap in a way that embodied their Academy, invited supporters to vote on their favorite hat while perusing SYF’s first-ever Virtual Silent Auction. The auction featured 600 items secured by Simon Mall teams across the country and helped SYF supporters find the perfect holiday gifts from home while raising critical funds for SYF’s mission. A partnership with Tory Burch, initiated by a Simon Mall manager with his local Tory Burch store, evolved into a two-hour shopping event where 20% of proceeds from 13 stores were donated to SYF.

Individual Giving

Individuals, including Simon employees, helped SYF finish the year in a solid place. Simon employee giving to SYF exceeded expectations – $460,000 to help students reach graduation day! Circle of Hope, the Simon Youth Academy-led fundraising campaign for SYF, raised nearly $10,000 from sixty-nine SYF teachers and Academy leaders. Hundreds of new donors mirrored their generosity to SYF in 2020, each of whom played a critical role in SYF’s ability to continue to serve students nationwide.
